Happy New Year, Philosophical Parents! 🕊️
What a year it’s been, right? From observing the growth in co-parenting to becoming familiar with creating healthy boundaries to giving ourselves grace when we’re doing the best we can, parenting is not for the faint of heart.
As 2025 approaches, I want to wish you and your family my very best for the year ahead. I appreciate you as a reader of this Substack channel and your willingness to learn & grow as a parent.
Now, as we set our sights on a new year, I want to focus on vision boards.
You’re probably familiar with vision boards in the general sense. Usually they’re created to set the tone for a new year or a new job, or perhaps after a break-up. But, how about creating a vision for your kids and family for 2025? While doing so will not determine the exact outcome of your or your kids’ lives, setting healthy goals for the future, can be helpful, exciting, and movitating.
How to create a family vision board:
Keep it light - you don’t need to spend a lot of time, angst, resources, or money to create the board. It should be a joyful process.
Grab fun supplies - if you enjoy being crafty and have a few hours, get some poster board (or cardboard), Sharpies, magazines, scissors, a digital printer, stickers and glue or tape.
Get the kids involved - whether your kids are 3 years old or 23, you can get the whole fam on board. Some children might want to create their own board but they can help with the general family version too. And, if you have a partner, ask them to get involved; the more the merrier.
Use Pinterest for inspiration - I’m not on the platform much these days (though I’ve linked my business account above if you’re interested). However, Pinterest is a dream for those who want to be inspired. From cozy picnics by the lake to pricey family vacations, Pinterest can help you and your fam dream big.
Now that you have your supplies, you can get crackin’…
Ask yourself, your children, and your partner what they hope to accomplish in the new year. Do they want better grades? Make new friends? Hang out with family more often? Try a new activity or hobby? Make the swim team?
Use printed images from Pinterest or any other site, or cut and paste pictures and words from magazines that reflect their desires and goals.
Incorporate stickers, motivational phrases such as “you can do it”, and the year “2025” on the board.
Use glue or tape to fasten the images and words to your board in an appealing fashion and - voila! - you’ve got yourself a vision board!
Either tack the board(s) up on a bulletin board or your, or your child’s, wall or arrange it on a desk or your fridge - somewhere that family members will regularly see the board.
If you’re not into “woo woo” spirituality then at the very least the board can serve as a prompt. If you do believe in manifestation, then you’ve got yourself a focus for the coming year.
I’ll be working on my vision board today and tomorrow - and hope to get my young adult children to do one too. If you decide to create a board for yourself or your family, I’d love to see it.
For now, all the best in 2025, Philosophical Parent — stay safe and stay real. ✨
